Secret of Mana is a game that an enormous amount of people remember fondly, even though it never expanded much beyond its Super Nintendo release in 1993. However, I never got the chance to play this game during my childhood and only knew about it through nostalgic game reviewers on Youtube that sang its praises. My lack of reverence for this game is probably why I don’t feel as much excitement for the recent announcement of a Secret of Mana 3D remake.
Square Enix put out a trailer showing a tiny amount of what the remade game looks like, with voice acting and everything. The game is set to release digitally worldwide on February 15, 2018 for PS4, PS Vita and PC via Steam. The remake will have many improvements to the gameplay along with new additions such as voice acting, special events, 3D graphics and a fully remade soundtrack.
The game looks almost identical to a recent PS Vita game that is very near and dear to my heart called Adventures of Mana, which is also a remake of an older game. It seems that that title was used as a testing ground for what would come in the future, which now we know is the Secret of Mana remake. For what it showed, it seems pretty solid, except for the English voice acting, which reminded me of all of the cringe-inducing parts in the Kingdom Hearts games. Regardless, I still find this pretty exciting and hope for a successful release, if it’s anything close to Adventures of Mana, which I loved. I now leave you with early screenshots of the game:
